Lewis and Clark were here
Lewis and Clark explored much of what would later become Beaverhead County Montana, with the help of Sacagawea, of course.
Some notable sites include:
Beaverhead Rock
Beaverhead Rock is located about 15 miles north of Dillon Montana. From the North it looks like the head of a beaver swimming. There is a natural hot spring (private land) that at one point had some tropical fish. They are probably not native. The area around Beaverhead Rock is also home to many rattlesnakes.
Camp Fortunate
Named for the good luck that Lewis and Clark received while staying there. Lewis arrived first and had some difficulty convincing the Shoshone tribe of their good intentions. Clark arrived later with Sacagawea who was recognized immediately by the Shoshone. Camp Fortunate is now at the bottom of Clark Canyon Reservoir along with the town of Armstead (about 20 miles south of Dillon Montana). Several scenic outlooks and campgrounds around the reservoir are named after Lewis and Clark and the Shoshone.
Clark's Lookout
Clark stood on top of what is now called Clark's Lookout State Park. The area has recently been renovated with a paved walking path, paved parking area, informational signs, and a restroom. From the top you can see for many miles. South is the interstate, Clark Canyon Reservoir and the Lima Peaks. North, you can see towards Butte and also towards Beaverhead Rock and Twin Bridges.
Be sure to check out the Beaverhead County Museum in Dillon Montana!
